Gary Rodger Winings, 70

DOVER — Gary Rodger Winings, of Dover, Delaware passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2015, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born on August 23, 1944, in Colville, Washington. He was 70 years old. Gary was the son of the late Raymond and Ollie (Harold) Winings. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Roland Gifford (second dad), Bob Winings, and Verva Yeager; brother in law, Lawrence Yeager; sister in law, Dawn Lechtenberg; nephew, Tim Harrington; niece, Linda DePaulo; and several other nieces and nephews.

Gary proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 27 years, beginning his career in Logistics and Material Control at the age of 18. He retired in 1989 as a Senior Master Sergeant, and began a second career with the Civil Service at the Youth Center on Dover AFB, holding that position for 18.5 years. He was very involved with The Boys and Girls Club, and spent a great deal of his free time volunteering at the Youth Center on Dover AFB coaching baseball, basketball, and soccer.

Gary also enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his greatest pastime was golf. He also was a member of the American Legion Fox Post in Dover; and MISGA, the Maryland Interclub Senior Golf Association. He enjoyed a quiet and peaceful life, and cherished spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Gary leaves behind his loving wife, Joan, of 45 years; children, Natalie (Mark) Cuddy, Mark (RyAnn) Winings; grandchildren, Lilly, Ella, Adrienne, Matson, Levi, and Emma; brother, Jim (Darlene) Winings; and sister, Neva (Raymond) Harrington; sister-in-law, Mary Gifford (second Mom); mother in law, Phyllis Lechtenberg; siblings in law, Vernelle (Floyd) Hackman, Lois (Gary) Frana, Larry Lechtenberg, Lora (Dave) Kuhn, and Alan Lechtenberg; and a special “sister”, Mary Lechtenberg.

A Viewing will take place on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, Delaware 19934. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church, 2348 Co. Rd. B32 Festina, Iowa, where friends may view one hour prior. Burial with full Military Honors, will take place immediately following services. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gary’s honor can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; All Children’s Hospital, John Hopkins Medicine, 500 7th Ave South, St. Petersburg, FL 33701; or The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Resource Development, Operations 1275 Peachtree Street NE Atlanta, GA 30309-3506.
