MILFORD - Frank George Vican, of Milford, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at home. He was 83.

Frank was born April 20, 1924, in Marydel, Md.

He moved to Milford as a teenager with his family.

His mother, Mary Warren, operated Mary's Lunch on Rehoboth Boulevard, now a private home.

As a young man, Frank worked for Gray's Coal and later as a truck driver with Sussex Poultry.

A corporal during World War II, after training at Fort Knox he drove the lead tank destroyer for Company A, 894 Battalion, 5th Army, landing at Anzio Beachhead, fighting through Italy and into Paris.

Wounded in action three times, Frank earned three Purple Hearts with Oak Leaf Clusters and four Bronze Stars.

He was mentioned several times in dispatches during the war.

Frank was a master mechanic at I.G. Burton for 28 years.

He later opened his own business and after retiring drove a bus in Ocean City, Md.

He was a Mason, a member of the American Legion, and for a number of years a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of World War II, the Wally Byam Caravan Club, and a volunteer at the South Bowers Fire Co.

A hardworking man of honor and integrity, Frank's mechanical aptitude, along with his ingenuity and stamina, enabled him to be an extraordinary problem solver.

His quick wit and sense of humor made him a joy to be with in any situation.

He enjoyed working, fishing, woodworking, traveling and gardening.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann Vican; his son, Frank George Vican Jr.; a brother, Antony Vican; and his sister, Helen Potter Rust.
