Frances 'Mickey' Messina, 79

DOVER - Frances "Mickey" Messina of Dover passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 79.

Mickey was born on Nov. 20, 1927, in Dover to William and Lula Smallwood Hurley Jr.

She was a lifelong resident of Kent County and the Cheswold area.

Mickey was the first and only woman to be appointed and then elected to Kent County Levy Court, May 1972 to November 1984.

She also served on the Kent County Board of Adjustments.

Mickey provided a high level of service to the people of Kent County and was an active and vital member of the Kent County Democratic Party.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Philip A. Messina of Dover; a son and his wife, Philip A. and Yvonne Messina Jr. of Camden; son and his wife, Leon and Ann Messina of Dover; a brother, Lewis Hurley of Florida; a sister, Molly Dempsey of Cheswold; grandchildren, Christopher, Valerie, Tracy, Leann; great-grand children, Matthew, and Christopher, Jr.

A viewing will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where remembrance services will be 11 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be at Lake Side Cemetery, Dover.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Breast Cancer Foundation.
