CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Frances D. Barrett of Chestertown died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, in Chester River Hospital Center, Chestertown. She was 85.
Born on Oct. 19, 1921, in Sudlersville, she was the daughter of the late Leonard A. and Margaret A. Durham.
Mrs. Barrett was a graduate of Millington High School, class of 1938.
She was also a graduate of Salisbury State Teacher"s College, class of 1942, where she was very active in her class reunion committee.
Mrs. Barrett took graduate courses at University of Delaware, University of Maryland, Towson State College, Goucher College and Loyola College.
She taught at Solley Elementary School, Anne Arundel County, Dudley Elementary School in Camden, N.J., Galena Middle School and Millington Elementary, where she taught the pilot group for special education and conducted the Millington Home Living Project for children with special needs.
Mrs. Barrett became the principal of Millington Elementary in 1954 until they consolidated with Galena Elementary, where she became administrative assistant from 1971 to 1978.
She retired in 1978 with 35 years of teaching experience.
One of Mrs. Barrett"s many accomplishments was that she published an article in the Associated Public School Systems in 1968 titled "The Millington Home Servicing Project," which was circulated to more than 225 schools nationwide.
She also tutored disabled children at home with the elementary and middle school classes.
Mrs. Barrett helped organize and set guidelines for the Senior Citizens Program of the Kent County board of education, and served as instructor from 1978 until her illness forced her into retirement.
In 1997, she was awarded The Kent County Public Schools Graduate of Distinction Award.
Mrs. Barrett was a member of many organizations, including the Kent County Retired Teachers, Maryland Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 36, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Auxiliary Post 652, Kent County Commission of the Aging, Millington Senior Citizens and Galena Busy Bees.
One of Mrs. Barrett"s passions was doing crafts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Barrett; her brothers, Aladay, Gaylord and Anthony Durham; and her sisters, Pauline Skinner and Mary M. Walls.
She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Lynn Price and her husband John; and her granddaughters, Jenny Price and Susan Price, all of Chestertown.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown, where friends may call one hour prior.
Interment will be at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, on Monday.
