Erma Mulford Duncan, 96

DOVER - Erma Mulford Duncan of Dover passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2007, after a brief stay in Westminster Health Center, Dover. She was 96.

Erma was born Jan. 11, 1911, in Kane, Pa. At the age of 8, her family moved to Philadelphia.

She graduated from Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia in 1929. She went on to become a medical technician in Philadelphia. Erma married Earle in 1935 and moved to Springfield, Delaware County, Pa. Together they operated Duncan Dairy, which later became Miller-Flounders and then Abbott's Dairy.

Erma and her family moved to Dover in 1960 when they bought the RC/Nehi Bottling Co. She was a former member of People's Church and the Dover Century Club. She enjoyed boating and horseback riding. She was an avid bridge player, claiming it kept her mentally alert. After she retired, she loved to travel and once took a trip around the world.

She was predeceased in death by her husband of 56 years, Earle; her parents, Millicent and George Mulford; two sisters, Ruth and May; a brother, Emerson; and a grandson, Bryce Duncan.

She is survived by a brother, Robert Mulford of Fort Myers, Fla.; two sons, Earle Duncan and his wife Sandy of Darien, Ga., and Robert M. Duncan and his wife Linda of Wyoming; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Erma was a warm and friendly person whose energy and enthusiasm were contagious. She maintained many intergenerational friendships. She said the key to a positive outlook and happy life was to accept change and to have young friends.

Friends may gather on Thursday, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Mulford Room at the Duncan Center, fifth floor, 500 W. Loockerman St., Dover.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Erma's name to the Delaware Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1636, Wilmington, DE 19899.

Arrangements are by Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming.

Letters of condolences may be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
