Emerson James 'Jim' Kelly, 84

CAMDEN - Emerson James "Jim" Kelly of Camden died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, in Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna after a valiant fight against Alzheimer's disease. He was 84.

Mr. Kelly was born June 13, 1922, in Pennsgrove, N.J., son of the late Patrick and Stella Kelly.

He attended Wheaton College in Illinois, during which he left to serve his country and became a four-year veteran of the U.S. Army in the European theatre in World War II.

Mr. Kelly worked for Playtex for many years, then went into teaching at Kent Vocational School and Sussex Central where he said he, "made boys into men," until he retired in 1985.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and imparted his wisdom to all who knew him.

He had many hobbies, among them gardening, weightlifting, natural foods and the Camden-Wyoming Lions Club. He volunteered for many years delivering with Meals on Wheels for Modern Maturity, Dover, and taught adults to read through the Mark Tutoring Program.

Mr. Kelly was a very active member of the Camden Friends Meeting for many years and also attended the Wyoming United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Dorothy (Tremayne) Kelly; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Christopher and Virginia "Bartie" Kelly of Dover and Theodore and Janet Jarrell of Camden; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Stella and John Quinn of Poquoson, Va., Phyllis and Al Moses of Smyrna and Kimberly D. Swanson of Camden; a sister, Violet Drock of Ocean View, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Jody Dallas and Tracy Ramirez, both of Newark, Brian Hickman of Newport News, Va., Natalie Newsome of Tennille, Ga., Christian Quinn of Poquoson, and Victoria Swanson, Ashley Swanson, Matthew Jarrell and Krista Jarrell, all of Camden; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Ramirez and Noah Hickman.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in the Wyoming United Methodist Church, 107 Broad St.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Day Break Adult Day Care, Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forest Ave., Dover, DE 19904; or Alzheimer's Association, Delaware Regional Office, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
