Edna Davidson Nuckols, 97

DOVER - Edna Davidson Nuckols, a resident of Dover"s Westminster Village since 1991, died peacefully at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover, on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007. She was 97.

Born in Buckingham County, Va., Nov. 25, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Ovid and Susan Henrietta Davidson.

Mrs. Nuckols became a registered nurse in Richmond, Va., at the Retreat for the Sick, with academic work at the Medical College of Virginia.

She received a post-graduate degree in operating room technique and management at Women"s Hospital in New York City.

Before her marriage to David Elwood Nuckols, she worked as an assistant supervisor of the operating room, Rahway Memorial Hospital in New Jersey.

After her marriage, Mrs. Nuckols worked as a special duty nurse at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital.

Later in life she worked as office manager of the J.G. Van Holten Co., a company that pioneered the packing of pickles in plyofilm bags, in Kenton; her husband was the local manager of the business.

Following Elwood"s death in l970, Mrs. Nuckols became [resident of the family business, Kent-Del-Pack Inc., which rented its Kenton property to the Van Holten Co.

In the course of her life, she lived in Virginia, Rahway and Moorestown, N.J.; New York City; Preston, Md.: Cheswold, Smyrna and Dover.

Mrs. Nuckols was a charter member of Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital"s Junior Board and a member of Dover"s Century Club since 1945.

An avid golfer, she played at the Garrison Lake Golf Course and the Maple Dale Country Club.

Mrs. Nuckols was among the first to move to Westminster Village and for many years served on the Hospitality Committee of the Residents" Association.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Nuckols Garrett, a graduate of Smyrna High School ("53) and the University of Delaware ("57). She is a senior editor at Alfred A. Knopf and lives in Leeds, Mass.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
