HARRINGTON - Dr. Zosimo A. Buendia, of Harrington, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 81.
He was born Bauan Batangas, Philippines, to the late Juan Buendia and Teresa Amurao.
Growing up in the Philippines, Dr. Buendia was a hard working student.
In high school to conserve paper, he would erase his notes and use the paper again.
To put himself through medical college, he drove a jitney to earn money.
Upon graduation from college, Dr. Buendia went to New York where he started out as an anesthesiologist and then went into surgery.
In 1961, he returned to the Philippines where he served as a general practitioner and surgeon.
In 1966, he returned to the United States, where he spent some time in Colorado and then, in 1971, he came to Harrington, where he opened up his general practice and remained until his death.
Dr. Buendia was one of only a few doctors who thought enough of his patients to make house calls.
Even when he became sick himself, his thoughts were always on his patients and their needs.
He was a hard worker and never considered retiring.
Dr. Buendia will be known for his sense of humor and his kidding around.
His whole life was dedicated to the medical profession which he loved dearly.
His services will be greatly missed by the Harrington community.
Dr. Buendia was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Medical Association, Delaware Medical Association and the St. Bernadette Catholic Church of Harrington.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dr. Amada M. Buendia; and his second wife, Dolores Pumaren "Lily" Buendia.
He is survived by a son, Zosimo M. Buendia of Harrington; sister, Ester Buendia of Harrington; and half sisters, Rhodora Paderon and Nelia Buendia of the Philippines.
A viewing will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. Dupont Highway, Harrington.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington.
