Dr. Harold Roberts, 59
WYOMING - After a long battle with ALS, Dr. Harold Roberts, Wyoming, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 59.
Harry graduated from Clarion State University with a bachelor of science in chemistry in 1971.
He went on to earn both his master's of education in 1976 and doctorate of education in 1994 from the University of Delaware.
Harry was an admired and respected Caesar Rodney School District administrator who began his career as a science teacher at Caesar Rodney High School in 1972.
He retired as superintendent of the district in June 2007.
Besides his expertise as an administrator, Harry was perhaps best known for his engaging sense of humor, which he often drew upon throughout his life and career.
His contributions are best reflected by an award of recognition presented to him by his much-loved Caesar Rodney School District: "CRSD has been forever transformed by your teaching, compassion for students and families, your leadership, and your quest for excellence. You have influenced state policy and been a role model for a new generation of educational professionals. Your CR family is grateful to have you as their leader."
Harry earned many awards of recognition, including the state's highest honor, The Order of the First State, from Gov. Ruth Ann Minner at his retirement, Superintendent of the Year in 2006-07, and 2007's Great Person of the Year, chosen by Dover Post readers.
He was a man of integrity and vision who touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
A superb athlete, Harry was proudest of his time as an active member of the Wilmington Rowing Club.
He and his partner Mac Holcomb won two championships at the U.S Rowing Masters National Regatta.
Harry achieved his individual personal best at the Head of The Charles River Regatta in Boston.
He also enjoyed wrestling, biking, weightlifting and cheering on the Caesar Rodney lacrosse team.
In addition to sports, Harry was an avid reader, meticulous gardener and an acclaimed pie maker.
Harry is survived by his parents, Harold and Marion Roberts of Mercer, Pa.; Tricia, his wife of more than 33 years; his sons, Jesse, Cullen, Eben and daughter-in-law, Jackie; his beloved granddaughter, Elle Roberts, who affectionately called him Doc; two sisters, Carol Deitzer of Pittsburgh, and Suzanne Conner of Mercer, Pa.; and two brothers, Richard Roberts of Clintonville, Pa., and Robert Roberts of Grove City, Pa.
Harry will also be greatly missed by his loving extended family, and countless dear friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
