Dr. Archie Randall Jordan, 87
DOVER - Dr. Archie Randall Jordan, of Dover, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, in Heritage at Dover. He was 87.
Dr. Jordan was born April 15, 1920, in Midway, Ala., the son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Jordan.
He served in the U.S. Army infantry under Gen. George Patton, Company K, 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, landing on Omaha Beach in July 1944, and was wounded in 1944 in Percy, France.
For his service in Normandy, Northern France, he received the following decorations and citations: Combat Infantry Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, World War II Occupation Ribbon, Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
During his recuperation at Camp Pickett, Blackstone, Va., Army Convalescence Hospital, Dr. Jordan met and married his wife, an Army nurse, in 1945.
She followed him to Germany, where he served with the Army of Occupation, 2nd Constabulary, Freising and Bavaria.
Dr. Jordan left active duty in 1947 and continued to serve his country in the Active Army Reserve for 28 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Prior to World War II, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama.
He received his master's in education from the University of Delaware, and a D.Ed. from Nova University Florida.
Dr. Jordan began his teaching career in 1948 at Rehoboth Beach High School as an industrial arts teacher.
In 1962, he joined the Caesar Rodney School District as a high school principal.
In 1967, he was named director of secondary education, and in 1970 became director of personnel, retiring in 1983 as assistant superintendent for personnel.
As an educator, Dr. Jordan served on the Delaware State Advisory Committee for the Commission on Secondary Schools Middle States Association as member and chairman.
He was a member of the board of trustees of the Middle States Association, Philadelphia, and the National Study for School Evaluation.
During his 14 years with the association, he served on more than 12 school evaluations.
He helped expand the evaluation of American Overseas Schools and served as chairman of school evaluations in Iran, Kuwait, India, Panama and Spain.
He served official positions with the Delaware Association of School Administrators, was a member of the Governor's Pension Advisory Committee, and was president of the Delaware Reserve Officers Association.
After his retirement, Dr. Jordan was state coordinator for retired teachers, representing the AARP national office.
When he served as president of the Delaware Retired School Personnel Association, he saw its membership expand from 300 to more than 2,000.
His main interest throughout his life was travel. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout the United States and around the world.
They particularly enjoyed participating in the educational E lderhostel program, having attended more than 20 during their active retirement years.
Dr. Jordan was preceded in death by a son, Peter Lay Jordan, in 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean E. Jordan of Dover; one daughter, Barbara J. Jordan of Babson Park, Fla., and Dover; and one son, Archie R. "Randy" Jordan Jr. and his wife Cheryl, of Baltimore.
Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where friends may call one hour prior.
Interment with full military honors will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
