Donald H. Griffith, 88 DOVER - Donald H. Griffith, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. Mr. Griffith was born March 4, 1921, in Beech Bottom, W. Va., to the late Lynn Griffith and Lucy Woodward Griffith. He graduated from St. Clairsville, Ohio High School, in the class of 1939. Don particularly enjoyed big band music and for a time led his own orchestra, "The DG's" in the 1940's until the war-time draft scattered its members. He had served in WWII in the United States Army during the European Theater and Normandy Invasion on Utah Beach. Following his time in the service, he married his high school sweetheart who had been widowed in 1944, and for many years was a wholesale lumber and millwork salesman and manager in New York and New Jersey until he retired in 1987. During his retirement years in Dover he enjoyed golfing with friends, traveling the U.S., and spending time with his grandchildren. In 1989 he returned to France and was given an Honorary Citizen certificate by the mayor of the city of Le Maire de Sainte-Marie-du-Mont for his participation in the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. Mr. Griffith was a member of the Peoples Church of Dover. Mr. Griffith was preceded in death by his son, Ron Griffith; stepdaughter, Jean Lee Turner of Dover; brothers, Wendell, Frank and Louis Griffith; and sisters, Mary Bailey and Margaret "Peg" Woods. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie Dinsmore Turner Griffith of Dover; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Peter Barclay of Laporte, Pa.; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Nick Evick of St. Clairsville, Ohio; three grandchildren, Todd, Kyle and Elizabeth Barclay all of Laporte, PA, currently attending colleges out of state. Memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at The Peoples Church of Christ, 46 S. Bradford St., Dover. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, 11am on Wednesday. Letters of condolences may be sent, and guest book signed at
