Donald Carney, 67

DOVER - Donald Carney of Dover departed this life on Sunday, March 18, 2007. He was 67.

He attended Cheswold School where he completed the eighth grade. Upon completion of his education, he went to work on the family farm in his early years. He began his employment career with Ennis and Deakyne Ford of Smyrna, and enlisted in the National Guard from 1960-1966.

After leaving Ennis and Deakyne, he then worked for E. Earl Downing Construction in Wilmington. He later was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber until the business closed, and then faithfully served for 27 years with Bridgeton Firestone of Dover until retiring.

He was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Indian tribe of Bridgeton, N.J., and a faithful attendee of many pow-wows both in New Jersey and Millsboro.

His passions were mowing his grass - it had to be just right - and tending his garden. He also enjoyed fishing. He and a special brother-in-law, Glen Minner, had planned on going as soon as the weather broke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Sammons Carney; two brothers, James Robert Sammons and Clarence Carney; and a sister, Loretta Draine.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Mosley Carney, of Dover; a daughter, Delores F. Carney Cole and a son-in-law, Robert "Greg" Cole, both of Hartly; a grandson, Angelo "AJ" Carney Heath, of Townsend; a granddaughter, Tiffany A.M. Carney Cole, of Hartly; six brothers, Melvin "Brownie" Carney and his companion, Barbara McDonald, of Fort Worth, Texas, Isaac R. Carney and his wife, Evelyn Mosley Carney, Larry W. Carney and his wife, Lois Morris Carney, Ronald "Sam" Carney and his wife, Carolyn Mosley Carney, Roland "Hicky" Carney, all of Dover, and Reginald "Mose" Carney, of Magnolia; six sisters, Agnes L. Durham and the late, Allen Durham, of Bridgeton, N.J., Harriet L. Street, of Georgetown, Emma R. Seeney and her husband, William S. Seeney, of Dover, Leona Mae Alvino and her husband, Vincent Alvino of Seaford, Janet D. Scotton and her husband, Rick Scotton of Dover, Frances E. Minner and her husband, Glen Minner; a very special and loyal brother-in-law, Edward Draine, husband of the late Loretta Draine; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Mosley Edwards and her husband, Roger L. Edwards of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Dorothy Mosley Horne and the late Adolphus H. Horne, of Washington; a special cousin that he considered a daughter, Sara "Turtle" Ridgeway; and nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

He will be sadly missed by his beloved pets Rut Row and Socks. He will also be missed by many friends, especially his co-workers at Firestone: Gary, Mike, Adam, Paco, Nuzzi, Kenny, Joe Dirt, Little John, Marie, Theresa, and Maggie.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 11 a.m.

Burial will be private.

The family requests that instead of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indian tribe of Bridgeton, N.J., PO Box 544, 18 E. Commerce St., Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
