Delores Virginia Batson Turner Walker, 77

NEWARK - Delores Virginia Batson Turner Walker of Newark died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, at Heartland Hospice Services, Newark. She was 77.

She was born in the Finchville-Cokesbury area of Dorchester County, Md., on March 16, 1930, daughter of the late Henry Clay and Virgie (Nichols) Batson.

Mrs. Walker married Hillard Jack Turner in 1951, who survives, and married her second husband, Kenneth Charles Walker Sr., in 1961, who preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Frederick Douglas High School, Cambridge, Md., in 1947, and attended Maryland State College in Princess Anne, Md., for two years before graduating from Bowie (Md.) State College.

Mrs. Walker later received her master"s degree in elementary education from Howard University and continued her education at Temple University, Philadelphia.

She taught school in Dorchester County, Somerset County, Sussex County, in the school system of Saginaw, Mich., and retired from the New Castle County School system after 33 years as a middle school teacher.

Mrs. Walker attended Cokesbury AUMP Church for many years and was a member of the Whites Chapel Kingdom Hall of Jehovah"s Witnesses in Newark.

She played piano and served as music director in whatever congregation she attended.

Mrs. Walker was a member of the Bowie State Alumni Association and the New Castle County Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, George, Leslie, Thurston, Sidney and Carroll Batson.

She is survived by six children, Deedra C. Turner and Jacqueline Walker, both of Rhodesdale, Md., and Bernadette and her husband Dewey Smallwood, Doniell L. and his wife Eva Walker, Kenneth Charles Walker II, and Yolanda Walker, all of Newark; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Christopher Walker and Jennifer Christina Delores Walker, both of Bridgeport, Conn.; and two great-grandchildren, Devon Walker and Messiah Walker; a sister, Oretha E. Batson; a sister-in-law, Henrietta T. Batson, both of Rhodesdale; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Framptom Funeral Home, Federalsburg, Md., where friends may call one hour proir.

Interment will follow at Cokesbury Cemetery near Reliance, Md.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Heartland Hospice Services, 261 Chapman Road, Newark, DE 19702.
