MILFORD - David Bryan LeGates passed away on Wednesday, Jun. 14, 2017, at Bayhealth at Milford Memorial Hospital. David was born in Milford, on May 8, 1956, to the late Gordon F. and Patricia Ford LeGates. He retired from Kraft Foods, Dover in 2011 after a 35 year career. He was a Life Member of South Bowers Volunteer Fire Company, and served as the Chief for 25 years retiring in 2014 with the position of Chief Emeritus. He dedicated his life to serving his community as the Fire Chief and gained great pride and enjoyment designing the fire apparatus that would continue to serve the community well into the future. David was a leader who believed in teaching others. Until he became ill he enjoyed hunting and was an avid outdoorsman. Enjoying many hunting trips across the United States and Canada. David is survived by his wife, Heidi (Burlingame) LeGates; son, David Taylor LeGates of Landsdowne, Va.; brother, Larry LeGates and family of Milford; sister, Gayle LeGates and her husband Charles Bachman of Georgetown; and several extended family members whom he loved dearly. Funeral Services with full fireman honors will be held Saturday, Jun. 24, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front St., Milford, where friends may call on Friday, Jun. 23, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. or Saturday after 12 p.m. Interment will be in Slaughter Neck Cemetery in Milford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bayhealth Foundation, 640 S. State Street, Dover, DE 19901.
