Daniel R. 'Dan' Smith, 58

DOVER - Daniel R. "Dan" Smith, of Dover, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 58.

Dan was born in Hackensack, N.J., son of the late George W. and Lorraine A. Smith.

He grew up in Ansonia, Conn., and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1967 to 1971.

Dan moved to Delaware in 1980 and was employed for many years by Storer Cable, Dover, and later as a residential maintenance worker at Westminster Village, Dover. He retired due to disability in 2001.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, crossword puzzles and Irish music.

Dan will be remembered as a good husband and father, and as one who was always very personable and helpful.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Connie Smith; a son, Adam (Jessica) Smith, of Dover; two grandchildren, Aiden and Kylie Smith, both of Dover; a sister, Adele Hartshorn of California; three nieces; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Interment with full military honors will be in the adjoining cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 100 W. 10th St., Suite 1002, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Arrangements are by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Smyrna.
