College Republicans: We're discouraged by cancellation of debates

Posted

The College Republicans at the University of Delaware are greatly disappointed in the university’s decision not to host the Delaware Debates in 2026.

For nearly two decades, the Delaware Debates at Mitchell Hall have provided Delaware voters an important opportunity to hear candidates discuss the issues facing our state and earn the trust of those they seek to represent.

From the student perspective, the Delaware Debates have engaged Blue Hens in the political process, allowing candidates to debate the important issues side by side. Since 2010, these debates have provided students an opportunity to hear candidates address these issues.

The 2026 election cycle is an important time for our state. Voters deserve to hear candidates discuss the pressing issues: crime, education, the rise in artificial intelligence, Social Security and more.

Voters still deserve to hear their candidates debate!

Real leaders should seek opportunities to display accountability, transparency and eagerness to share their ideas with the public. They should not cower behind an establishment brand or advertisements funded by special interests.

We commend Dr. Mike Katz, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, for publicly calling for a debate, and we hope his opponent, incumbent Democratic Sen. Chris Coons, will accept this offer, for the good of Delaware voters.

Dr. Katz has routinely put people over party in this campaign. His call for a public, side-by-side debate again reflects that commitment and provides an avenue for voters to see him and Sen. Coons discuss the problems plaguing Delaware.

The College Republicans extend our support and keenness to facilitate and organize an on-campus debate between Dr. Katz and Sen. Coons.
