DOVER - On July 6, 2015 beloved husband, father and grandfather Clarence "Carlton" Courtney passed away at home peacefully while surrounded by his family. Mr. Courtney is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Norma Jean Courtney (Robb); and sons, Michael, Garry and his wife, Kim; and their son, Sam; Jeffrey and his wife, Jennie; and their sons, Joshua and Jacob; daughters, Donna; and her son, Chancellor; and Carolyn, and her friend, Gary Johnston; and her children, Erica and Tyler Wildrick. Mr. Courtney is also survived by brothers, Wesley (Jack) and his wife, Margaret, and George and his wife, Beverly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lillian Courtney; and brothers, Julian and David Courtney. Carlton was born on April 24, 1935 in Dover and graduated from Dover High School in 1953. Carlton had a lengthy career in transportation safety management and a second career working with the Blood Bank of Delmarva. Carlton served honorably in Korea in the US Army from 1954 through 1956. Carlton was a past member of the local chapter of Del-Vets and was a current member of the Dover Elks Lodge 1903. Carlton was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dover and was also a member of Harvest Years and Modern Maturity Senior Centers. Carlton was a devoted family man. He and his family spent many summer weekends at their summer retreat in Ocean View and earlier years camping in the Smokey Mountains. He was active in Little League Baseball, scouting, and other activities in which his children and grandchildren participated. Mr. Courtney was a past president of Dover Little League (1979) and served as Dover Little League's Chief Umpire for 8 years. He was also a member of the Lower Delaware Baseball Umpires Association and enjoyed officiating games and tournaments at all levels of baseball. He passed peacefully and will be missed by his family and friends. The family asks in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First Baptist Church of Dover or Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid Atlantic. There will be a viewing at Torbert Funeral Home 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover on Thurs., July 9 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. There will be a Memorial service at the First Baptist Church, 301 Walker Road, Dover on Fri., July 10 at 11 a.m.
