NEWPORT, R.I. - Claire (Humes) Ernsberger, 77, of Newport, died Thursday June 30, 2016. Born on February 26, 1939 in Milford, she was the daughter of the late Alphonso Egbert and Ruth (Clauss) Humes. Mrs. Ernsberger attended Milford Schools during her 1st through 10th grades, and finished her schooling at Hampden DuBose Academy in Florida. Her college years were at Westminster College, in New Wilmington, Pa., from which she graduated in 1961. She was married for 44 years to the late Roxy Edgar Ernsberger, untl his death in 2007. During her childhood, she attended First Presbyterian Church in Milford, and was active with the Youth Fellowship during her teenage years. Mrs Ernsberger was an avid volunteer in her community---a member of the Point Association of Newport, R.I., Friends of the Newport Public Library, and PEO Chapter D--R.I. She had also been a member of Trinity Church Alter Guild, the Newport Yacht Club, the Newport Preservation Society, and served as a docent in some of Newport's Mansions. She is survived by her three children, Evan Ernsberger of Norman, Okla., Nicole Cook of Atlanta, Ga., and Alexa Dull of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; her two siblings, Harry Humes of Milford, and Ruth Folta of Maryville, Tenn.;, and her nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held on July 5, 2016 in Newport, R.I.
