WILMINGTON - Cecily Elizabeth Whitt of Wilmington died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, in Wilmington while she was doing what she loved - running. She was 33.
Ms. Whitt was a graduate of the University of Charleston in Charleston, W.Va, with a bachelor of science in nursing. While a student there, she participated in many activities, including crew, sorority and worked as a nurse extern at Charleston Area Medical Center. As a graduate, she worked at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. She moved to A.I. Dupont Children"s Hospital where she was most recently employed. She truly loved her job, the staff with whom she worked, the children and families she helped. She frequently received cards, letters, pictures and crafts the children created. She was honored as the Employee of the Month for October.
She loved many outdoor activities, including running, swimming, canoeing, boating and especially spending time at the family cabin in West Virginia, where she loved hiking, running the Greenbrier Trail, tubing down the river and nightly campfires. She loved all animals and she was devoted to her rescued cats, Quinton, Princess and Onyx.
Ms. Whitt frequently participated in local runs, including the Operation Smile Run at A.I. Dupont, the Broad Street Run and most recently the Half-Marethon in Philadelphia, where she placed among the top five runners in her age group.
She is survived by a beloved, special friend, Ed Heaney of Wilmington; her mother, Carolyn Whitt of Seaford; her father, Larry Whitt of Salisbury; a sister and a brother-in-law, Stacie and Robbie of Seaford; a brother, Jonathan Whitt of Seaford; two nephews, Brock and Jordan; her adored aunt, Reba; an uncle, Pete; cousins, Reba, Rosemary, Joe, Karen, Martha, Richard and David; many aunts and uncles, including Robert and Cleda, Mayfair, Linda and Wade, Rosemary and Tom and Jerry and Bonnie; many more family and friends; and her precious cats, Quinton, Princess and Onyx.
A Celebration of Life service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, 315 High St., Seaford.
Reception will follow in Fellowship Hall.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to A. I. Dupont Hospital for Children, 3C North, Attn.: Peter March, 1600 Rockland Road, P.O. Box 269, Wilmington, DE 19899; or Whimsical Animal Rescue Inc., P.O. Box 1697, Seaford, DE 19973.
