Caroline McHenry
Lovejoy, 81
Caroline McHenry Lovejoy passed away peacefully on January 27, 2021 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Born on February 11, 1939 to Douglas J McHenry, Sr. and Caroline Picken McHenry, the young Caroline spent her childhood with her two older brothers, Douglas and Machin, in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. It was there that she learned to love and appreciate music from her mother who was a concert pianist, and the joys of fishing, with her father.
Caroline attended the Katherine Gibbs secretarial school in Philadelphia and later put her training to work with a logging company in Prospect, Oregon where she met her future husband, David Ross Lovejoy. They were married in Prospect on December 19th, 1958. They eventually moved back East to be closer to family and finally settled in Dover, Delaware, followed by Freeport, N.Y., where she and David raised their own family.
Caroline was a good friend to many, and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved animals, the ocean, flowers and flower gardens, and travel. But her greatest love was everything art. She loved museums, art history, and studying the lives and work of artists. She was an accomplished artist and artisan in her own right, enjoying acrylic and watercolor painting, and fiber arts of all kinds, as well as teaching. In addition to instilling an appreciation for art in her own children and grandchildren, she taught art at the Transfiguration Parish Day School in Freeport, N.Y.
Caroline is survived by her husband, David; as well as her son, Alan Lovejoy; her daughter, Debbie Lovejoy; and her two granddaughters, Hannah and Molly Lovejoy. Her kind and gentle spirit will be missed by all those who knew her.
Services will be private.
