Carlton Harvey Porter, 86

GREENSBORO, Md. - Carlton Harvey Porter of Greensboro died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, in Caroline Home for Hospice, Denton. He was 86.

He was born Aug. 3, 1921, in Greensboro, to the late Harvey and Margaretha (Kornumpf) Porter.

Mr. Porter was a 1938 graduate of Greensboro High School. He joined the ROTC program at the University of Maryland, graduating in 1942. Mr. Porter was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.

Upon graduating, he went to Quantico, Va., to attend the Marine Officer Candidate School. He served his country as a Marine officer during World War II and the Korean War, earning the rank of major.

Mr. Porter married his wife, Kathleen Brubaker, on Oct. 8, 1949.

He was first employed as an assistant county agent in Georgetown, Del. He then was employed with the Pet Milk Co. of Greensboro as a dairy farm inspector for 25 years. When Pet Milk Co. closed, he went on to work for the Interstate Milk Producers Cooperative for 16 years, retiring in 1987.

Mr. Porter served on the Caroline County School Board for 10 years, holding the office of president for seven of the years, which oversaw the consolidation and the integration of the Caroline Public School System.

He was a 60 year life member of the Greensboro Lions Club and was awarded the Lion"s distinguished Melvin Jones Award.

He was a life member of the St. Paul"s United Methodist Church, where sang in the church choir, served as a Lay Minister and on various committees and in other church positions.

Mr. Porter volunteered as a 4-H and Boy Scout leader.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Alberta Gelletly.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen B. Porter; one son, Michael Porter of Greensboro; one daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Walter Palmer of Denton; and two brothers, Richard Porter of Greensboro, and Arthur Porter of Denton.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Paul"s United Methodist Church, 306 W. Sunset Ave., Greensboro, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Interment will be in Greensboro Cemetery.
