Beverly E. 'Bev' Workman, 69
ELLENDALE - Beverly E. "Bev" Workman, of Ellendale, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, in home surrounded by his family. He was 69.
Bev was born in Georgetown, the son of Hazel (McGee) Weist and the late Preston Lee Workman.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator. He began working at the old landfill in Lincoln, then worked for George & Lynch, Ray Savage, A.P. Croll, Melvin Joseph, and finished his career at Swain Construction, where he retired because of his health in 2006.
Bev also worked part-time at Fisher Auto Parts in Milton.
He was a member of the Ellendale Ruritan.
Bev truly was dedicated to the volunteer fire service.
In the early 1960s, he became a member of the Carlisle Fire Co. of Milford, where he was active for several years.
Then, in 1974, he joined the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department serving the Ellendale community up until his death.
Bev was a life member of the department and served many positions such as chief engineer, assistant engineer, assistant chief, fire captain, communications officer, fire police and was currently holding the position of custodian of the building at the time of his death.
In 2000, Bev received the Fireman of the Year Award.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years Gloria Mae Workman; three sons, Timothy Lee Workman and his companion Jo Ann Kennard, of Ellendale, Michael Wayne Workman of Ellendale and Edwin Sutton of Wilmington; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Sue and Kenny Armstrong of Lincoln; his mother, Hazel Weist of Milford; three sisters, Elizabeth Payton of Canterbury, Virginia Roop of Lincoln and Hester Farrell of Frederica; a brother, Raymond Workman of Lewes; grandchildren, Timothy James Rossi, Amber Workman, Eric Armstrong, Andrew Syester, Ashley Workman, Boo Armstrong, Holden Kennard, Cody Lee Workman and Haylee Workman; a great-grandson, Cashis Rossi; and several nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held from noon-3 p.m. Friday in the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department, 302 Main St., Ellendale, where funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. followed by firefighters honors.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Delaware Hospice Southern Division, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947; or to the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 75, Ellendale, DE 19941.
