POTEAU, Okla. - Betty (Boyer) Shockley of Poteau passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, in Oklahoma. She was 73.

She was born in Pottsville, Pa., and moved to Delaware when she was 12 years old.

Betty lived in the Smyrna-Clayton area from 1966 until 2001; she then moved to Arkansas before settling in Poteau, where she spent the past three years. She was looking forward to moving back to Delaware in the near future.

She was a loving, caring and supportive wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend.

In the 1980s, Betty worked at the Delaware Home and Hospital for the Chronically Ill, Smyrna. While there, she cooked meals, mended clothes and visited with the patients on her days off, especially those who were lonely and forsaken.

She loved gardening, cooking, baking, sewing and crocheting.

Betty was a hard worker, dedicated to getting the job done and done right.

She touched those who knew her with her great sense of humor, her can-do attitude and her overall compassion for life.

Many in the Smyrna-Clayton area knew Betty for the great potato rolls and breads she baked, especially during the holidays.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Karen L. and William David Simpson of Dover, and Diane and Ronald Frandsen of Arkansas; one son and his wife, Keith D. and Theresa LaVere of Missouri; eight grandchildren, Eric B. Simpson, Deven D. and Justin W. LaVere, Bobby Godfrey, Patti Miller, Robert Cassady Jr., Jason Cassady and Heather Cooper; six great-grandchildren; her sisters, Arlene M. Donophan of Dover, Loretta M. LaVere of Felton, Frances Benson of Bridgeville, and Maureen Peters of Boothwyn, Pa.; and her brothers, William W. Boyer of Seaford, and Keith D. Boyer of Ellendale. Betty is also survived by her mother, Marie E. (Coady) Boyer of Dover; and was preceded in death by her father, Harry W. Boyer.

Betty was preceded in death by one child, Patricia A. LaVere; and one grandchild, Katherine D. LaVere. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David W. Shockley of Smyrna. She is survived by his three children, William H. Shockley of New York, Diane S. English of Smyrna, and Charlton L. Shockley of Viola; two grandchildren, David W. Shockley and Jennifer C. Shockley of Connecticut; and three great-grandchildren, Chelsie, Isabel, and Sophia Bell Shockley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of choice.

Her cremated remains will be buried beside her late husband, David W. Shockley. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.
