Bertha Ellen Spencer, 89

TOWNSEND - Bertha Ellen Spencer, of Townsend, died on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. She was 89. Mrs. Spencer was born Feb. 3, 1920, in Roderfield, W.Va., the daughter of the late Dave and Minnie Bedwell Roop. Mrs. Spencer worked as a clerk for many years for Golden's Pharmacy and with Happy Harry's Pharmacy in the same location in Smyrna. She enjoyed her place at the beach, and looked forward to visits from her grandchildren. Mrs. Spencer enjoyed camping in her earlier days with her late husband, Basil. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her husband, Basil T. Spencer after 66 years of marriage; a daughter, Linda Potter; two sisters, Edith and Madeline; a brother, James; and a grandson, Junior. She is survived by her son, David R. Spencer and his wife Ginny of Townsend; a brother, Luther H. Roop of Townsend; five grandchildren, Stacy, Shaun, Ricky, Michael, and Wesley; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19904. Letters of condolence may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium, Inc., 29 South Main Street, Smyrna.
