ODESSA - Benjamin Pernol Jr. of Odessa passed away peacefully Monday, July 9, 2007, surrounded by his family at Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was 71.
Mr. Pernol proudly served his country for over 20 years with the U.S. Army 101st and 173rd Airborne divisions retiring as a sergeant first class in 1972.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and also Vietnam, where he was the recipient of two Bronze Stars.
Following his retirement, he served as Veterans of Foreign Wars National Council member, VFW National Legislative Chairman, served on the Commission of Veteran Affairs for Delaware State, served as past president of the VFW National Home for Children and Past State Commander.
He was also a lifetime member of VFW 3792 in Middletown, where he served as past post commander, a member of American Legion Post 25 in Middletown and a lifetime member of Middletown Volunteer Hose Co.
After 18 years of service, Mr. Pernol retired from Johnson Controls in Middletown.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Pernol Sr.; and his mother and stepfather, Hazel P. and Howard Davis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Rebecca "Becky" Pernol; a son, Benjamin H. Pernol and his wife, Jutta of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; four daughters, Gale Dixon and her husband, Robert of Earleville, Md., Judy Moore and her husband, Robert of Townsend, Becky Sinex and her husband, Jim of Townsend and Lisa Estep and her husband, Tom of Bear; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter due in October.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where family and friends may call one hour prior to services and on Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m.
Interment with military honors will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
Instead of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Mr. Pernol"s memory to VFW Post No. 3792, P. O. Box 185, Middletown, DE 19709-0185.
