SOC--ITALY-CRISIS
Andrea Pirlo out of contention for Italy job amid flap over deal with Russian betting firm
SUMMARY: Andrea Pirlo is out of contention for the Italy job amid political concerns over a sponsorship deal with a Russian betting firm. Pirlo confirmed that he was out in an Instagram post Monday. Italian politicians had raised concerns about Pirlo’s contract to be an ambassador for Fonbet. They say the national team coach should not have conflicting views on Italy’s support for Ukraine in the war with Russia. Pirlo was at best a third choice after Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola turned down offers to coach a team that has failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups. The controversy also reportedly has Paolo Maldini considering stepping down just 16 days into his new job as technical director of the Italian soccer federation.

FBN--HOT SEAT COACHES
Jets’ Glenn, Bucs’ Bowles and Bengals’ Taylor among NFL coaches facing hot-seat pressure
SUMMARY: Several NFL coaches are already feeling the heat, even with the regular season still weeks away. The New York Jets’ Aaron Glenn, Tampa Bay’s Todd Bowles and Cincinnati’s Zac Taylor face pressure to deliver strong starts in make-or-break seasons. For others such as Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur and Philadelphia’s Nick Sirianni, the pressure isn’t immediate but could rise if their teams don’t meet high expectations. Bowles needs a strong performance from quarterback Baker Mayfield and a revamped defense, while Glenn overhauled his staff to improve both sides of the ball. Taylor’s playoff hopes hinge on a healthy Joe Burrow.

BBO--THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL
A reliever performs well, then gets sent down. Weiss blames limit on pitchers for roster churn
SUMMARY: The Atlanta Braves called up right-hander Elieser Hernández from the minor leagues, and a few days later he finally appeared in his first big league game since 2024. After throwing three scoreless innings in relief and earning the win at Baltimore, he was immediately designated for assignment. What Atlanta did is fairly common now. If a pitcher works several innings of relief — even if he does so effectively — a fresher arm is brought in to replace him. Baseball’s union is proposing a couple rule changes related to this type of roster churn.
