AnnaMae Perdue Vincent, longtime resident of Pine Bluff Village, Salisbury, MD, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024 at home.
Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late E. Sampson and Mattie Beatrice Shay Perdue. She is survived by a son, Carl E. Vincent Jr. (Tina); two daughters-in-law; Susan T. Vincent, Salisbury, and Jill M. Vincent, Roanoke, VA; three grandchildren; Katie Vincent Serenyi (Justin), Margaret Mae Vincent and Jake T. Vincent; two brothers, Roy Shay and Oren C. Perdue; two great-grandchildren, Addison Jane and Savannah Lee Serenyi; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl E. Vincent; a son, Sampson G. Vincent; a sister and her husband, Iris Perdue Morris (Earl); brother, Francis C. Perdue and wife (Lois T.); and sister-in-law (Ruth D.).
AnnaMae was one of only two members of the last graduating class of Hammond’s School in 1937, a 1941 graduate of Wicomico High School, and a 1945 graduate of the Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing, now Salisbury University (SU), and was the oldest graduate of the program at the time of her death. After working general duty at PGH for one year, she was offered the position of nurse in the first pediatric practice of Dr. Albert Kitts, later joined by Dr. William Morgan. During her career, she worked private duty, was employed by the Wicomico Health Department, Pine Bluff State TB Hospital, UMES Health Center, and the SU Health Center, from which she retired. She once served as a delegate to the National Nurses Conference in Chicago.
She is a member of the Wicomico Chapter No. 91, Order of the Eastern Star, PGH School of Nursing Alumni, and MD Classified Employees Association. She was one of the oldest members of Bethel United Methodist Church, Walstons.
She served as a lay delegate to the Peninsula Delaware Conference for seven years, where she served on several committees. She also attended the Jurisdictional Conference in Annville, PA. She toured the Holy Land and visited England where she followed the life of John Wesley, enlightening her on the history of Methodism.
AnnaMae was a longtime member of the local YMCA, attending water aerobic classes into her 90’s. AnnaMae was a frequent writer, sending letters and postcards to family and friends in her immaculate cursive handwriting.
AnnaMae donated her body to the Maryland Anatomy Board. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date when her cremains are interred at the family plot in Bethel Cemetery, Walstons.
To demonstrate her commitment to higher education, and to assist others pursuing the same, she endowed a nursing scholarship for registered nurses at Wor Wic Community College.
