DENTON - Alvin Lee Fearins of Denton died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at Ruxton Health of Denton. He was 85.
He was born Jan. 10, 1922, son of the late Jesse Lee and Bessie Mae (Torbert) Fearins. His wife of 49 years, Catherine M. (Blazejak) Fearins, preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 1996. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Lee Fearins, on April 8, 2001.
Mr. Fearins grew up in Hickman and attended Caroline County High School.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He served aboard the USS John R. Pierce, a combatant ship of the destroyer class. He covered some 30,000 nautical miles in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He participated in the invasion of Normandy, and in convoy duty on a merchant marine ship.
Upon return, he worked as a farmer and factory worker until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Fearins was a member of the Caroline American Legion Post 29.
In addition to his parents, wife and daughter, Mr. Fearins was preceded in death by three brothers, Nelson Fearins, Dawson Fearins and Lester Fearins.
He is survived by a sister, Helen Wilson of Denton; two sons, John Fearins and Jesse Fearins, both of Denton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Interment at the Eastern Shore Veteran's Cemetery in Beulah will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Homestead Manor, 410 Colonial Drive, Denton, MD 21629.
