DOVER - Alice M. Holmes of Dover died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, in the Country Rest Home, Greenwood. She was 92.
Mrs. Holmes was born Feb. 14, 1915, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to the late John G. Munson and Eliza S. (Short) Munson, and was raised in Rogers City, Mich.
She spent much time growing up in her grandparents', Mr. and Mrs. John Stanley Short, home in Milford.
Mrs. Holmes received her Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies from the Smith College in Northampton, Mass., in 1938.
During World War II, she served as vice chairman of the American Red Cross in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she was in charge of the blood bank.
Mrs. Holmes worked for a short time at South Dover Elementary School and organized the first PTA at that school, and served as its first president in 1956.
Mrs. Holmes was a member of the Kent County Vo-Tech School Board from 1971 to 1986 and served in this capacity with exceptional ability.
She was appointed to the Interstate Cooperation Commission by Governor Terry in 1965 and served until 1969.
Mrs. Holmes was instrumental in starting the Women's Republican Club of Dover in 1965, and served as its second president.
She served on the State Republican Committee since 1963 until she chose to resign in 1974.
Mrs. Holmes was a member and was a board member of the Colonial Dames of Delaware.
She was a member and past president and past board member of the John Dickinson Mansion.
Mrs. Holmes also served as president of the Wilson Dunes Condominium Association in Dewey Beach for two years.
She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Dover, where she was past Sunday school superintendent and active in many women's church projects.
She married Albert W. Holmes Sr. in 1945. Her husband and son have owned and operated Holmes Insurance Agency in Dover since 1956.
Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, Albert W. Holmes Sr., in August 1986.
She is survived by her son, Albert "Bill" Holmes and his wife Charlene "Sam" of Dover; her granddaughter, Lonna Luhrman and her husband Eddie; and five great-grandchildren, Shawn, Hayden, Dougie, Heather and Ashley.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Christ Episcopal Church, 501 S. State St., Dover.
