Alex Curtis Benson, 74

HARRINGTON - Alex Curtis Benson of Harrington departed this life Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 74.

He received his education at Pierre S. DuPont School.

After finishing his education, Mr. Benson served in the U.S. Army, where he received an honorable discharge.

Upon his return home, Mr. Benson was employed with the Delaware Department of Corrections, and remained there for more than 25 years until his retirement.

Mr. Benson was a devout Christian man and a member of John Wesley United Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon, trustee and worship leader.

He was an avid soloist who loved to sing at various churches, weddings and community events. He sang to the glory of God and never took gratuities for his melodious voice.

His favorite songs were "Ain't it Sweet," "My God's a Great Creator," "Walk that Milky White Way," "Rough Side of the Mountain" and "Time has Made a Change."

Those who had the privilege and honor of hearing Deacon Alex sing often made the comment that his voice sounded just like the voice of well-known singer Sam Cooke.

Mr. Benson was an asset to his community in that he was a dedicated member of the Harrington Historical Society, the Delaware Agricultural Museum, the Fraternal Order of Police and he was one of the founding members of John Wesley United Methodist Church and he served in and on many other organizations.

However, the greatest joy of Mr. Benson's life was to frequently visit his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. During these visits one thing was for certain, and that was that when he was around there was going to be plenty of jokes and lots of laughter.

He had a smile that was contagious and he was not shy about showing it.

In addition to his parents, Sally and Emmanuel Benson, Mr. Benson was preceded in death by his wife, Maryellen; a son, Larry Harrison; nine brothers, Roland, Ed, James, Charles, Oscar, Randolph, Francis, Robert and Harry; and three sisters, Rachel, Dorothy and Beulah.

He leaves to cherish his memories three grandchildren, Antonio May of Dover, Leslie Osborne of Bronx, N.Y., and TrenaShaye Fountain of Dover; five great-grandchildren, Whitney Lovelock, Kenneth Fisher Jr., Ty'Yonna Murray, Terryn Murray and Aturus Williams; three brothers, Carl and his wife the Rev. France Benson and Leroy Benson, all of Harrington, and Delbert E. and his wife Delores Benson of Cambridge, Md.; two sisters, Catherine Stevens of Harrington and Louise and her husband John Gray of Chandler, Ariz.; four sisters-in-law, Hattie Martin, Cula Thomas, Ester Mae Benson and Mottie Davis; one brother-in-law, Joseph Harrison; four godchildren, Jenean Smith, Theresa Henderson, Raven Justice and Christine Polk; a devoted niece and caregiver, Mary and her husband Jeff Smith; as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be noon Saturday in St. Paul United Methodist Church, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior.

The Rev. Dr. Jeanel Starling will deliver the eulogy.

Floral deliveries will be accepted from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. only.

Interment will be in the John Wesley Cemetery, Milford Neck.

Arrnangements by Deborah E. Harris-Nock Funeral Services, Greenwood.
