Alan R. "Tex" Porter, 76
Alan R. "Tex" Porter of Salisbury died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, in Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury. He was 76.
Mr. Porter was born April 19, 1930, in Rock Hall, son of the late Louis Howard and Florence Amelia Dodson Porter.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years and retired as staff sergeant in 1969. During his service, he fought in Vietnam and Korea and was able to travel to many places, and was stationed at Fort Meade, Fort Bliss, Texas, and Germany, to name a few.
The Korean Service Medal, the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star were among his decorations that he was the most proud.
Mr. Porter retired as a bank teller, working at a bank in El Paso, Texas, and Maryland National Bank.
He was a very active member of Salisbury Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 194, where he was always willing to step in and lend a helping hand to anyone. As a member of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 34, he volunteered as a driver, where he logged more than 100,000 miles assisting disabled veterans with doctor"s appointments and medical needs. He was also an active member of the Salisbury American Legion, Post 64, Loyal Order of the Moose Chapter 1280, Salisbury and a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, where he was the Seam Squirrel of Pup Tent 6.
Mr. Porter was an avid, lifelong New York Yankee fan. He enjoyed reading and was a big fan of country and Western music. For the many family and friends that knew him, his kind and gentle spirit will always remain.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roy Alan Porter; four brothers, Owen Porter, Carl Porter, Harold Porter and Roy Porter; and two sisters, Myrtle Perry and Evelyn Stevens.
He is survived by his daughter, Judith Lynn Renner of Bloomington, Ill.; two grandsons, Max and Alex Renner; and a sister, Miriam Watson of Rock Hall; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Immanuel Baptist Church, 1514 Old Ocean City Road, Salisbury. The Revs. Woodrow Crouse and J. Harvey Dixon will officiate.
Burial with military honors will be in Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock.
