William Howard Smith Sr.

William Howard Smith Sr., 90 HENDERSON, Md. - William Howard Smith Sr., 90, of Henderson, Md., died Sunday, May 30, 2010, in Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover. He was born Nov. 1, 1919, in Olkney Hollow, Hemphill, W.Va., to the late William Thomas and Rosa Runyon Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired Sgt. 1st Class for the US Army. He served his country honorably in many important WWII battles including the Normandy Invasion, the St. Lo Breakthrough, Battle of the Bulge, at Ryland and other central European battles. He also served over seas during the Korean War retiring from the Army in 1963. Upon retiring he moved to Henderson where he was employed with Playtex of Dover, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Caroline County Memorial VFW, Post #7937, the Henderson United Methodist Church and was a USO volunteer. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elsie I. Smith; two daughters, Carol Ann Garrand and husband Scott of Frederick, Md., and Diana Palmatory and husband Danny of Henderson, Md.; one son, William "Tim" H. Smith, Jr. and wife Sandy of Camden, Del.; six grandchildren, Daniel Palmatory, Dale Palmatory, Nikky Smith, Krissy Smith, Katie Smith and Lexi Smith; and his faithful companion "Roscoe." Services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, June 3, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Goldsboro, Md., where a visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 2. Interment will be in Greensboro Cemetery, Greensboro. Memorial contributions may be sent to Henderson United Methodist Church, c/o Ellen Malenfant, 4259 Mahan Corner Road, Marydel, DE 19964.
