William Henry 'Mr. Bill' Thomas, 60
BALTIMORE - William Henry "Mr. Bill" Thomas of Baltimore was born Sept. 8, 1946, in Spartanburg, S.C. He was the eldest son of the late Harden Thomas Sr. and Willie Mae Thomas. On Monday, April 2, 2007, God took him to his heavenly home after suffering from a long illness. He had been hospitalized in the VA Medical Center, Perry Point. He was 60.
Mr. Thomas attended public schools in Anne Arundel County and graduated from high school in Baltimore City.
In October 1963, he joined the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge two years later. In 1976, he was joined in holy matrimony to the late Rosalie Mosby. To this union, their beloved daughter, LaShana Yvette was born.
Mr. Thomas resided for a while in Baltimore City with his wife and daughter. Illness overtook him and he moved to Kent County in 1997, where he stayed in a number of nursing homes.
He loved to listen to music. He could often be seen, sitting on a porch, in a backyard or on a front step with his boom box listening to gospel or smooth jazz, humming and tapping to the beat. He was very sociable and would walk down the street on his way to the store for cigarettes or coffee, often stopping to speak with neighbors or wave to folks passing by. He could always be recognized by his soft voice, broad smile and hearty laugh.
Mr. Thomas had a special affection for children and children loved him. He enjoyed every member of the Community Action Marching Team of Butlertown and tried to attend every parade they participated in. He especially enjoyed the presence of Shaun, Tiara, Adam, Evan and Brandon Jones, as well as Chuck and Terry Hart, and Janelle Thompson. He had a special way of making them laugh and he enjoyed his time with them.
He has a close and loving relationship with his daughter, LaShana. He was her special buddy during her childhood and often saved her from her mother's punishments. He would greet her at the door after school with candy and would take her on car rides so that they could spend time together. They bonded even more so after the tragic death of her mother, Rosalie, in 1999 and in later years LaShana returned the love by becoming his caretaker.
He leaves to cherish his memories his beloved daughter, LaShana Thomas of Worton; his devoted mother, Willie Mae Thomas of Baltimore; his siblings, Harden Thomas Jr. of Baltimore, Frank Thomas of Baltimore, Patricia Jackson of Baltimore, Gwendolyn Noakes (Leroy) of Baltimore, Sarah Brown (Carroll Sr.) of Baltimore, Sharon Thomas of Baltimore and Betty Middlebrooks (Anthony Sr.) of Baltimore; six sisters-in-law, Donna Thomas, Jacqueline Vinson, Pamela Russell, Rustina Russell, Rochelle Sykes and Sophia Goines; six special caretakers and friends; Doug and Joyce Jones, Ernest Robinson, Rhonda Hart, James Sisco, Matt Whitfield and Sonny Winters; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and very special friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Mount Olive A.M.E. Church, Butlertown, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Coleman's Corner.
