TOWNSEND - William Evans Sr. of Townsend passed away Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, in Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 61.
Mr. Evans was born Oct. 15, 1945, in Chattaroy, W.Va.
In his early years, he worked at Avison, New Castle, and also at Brandywine Raceway.
Mr. Evans retired due to health reasons as an assistant manager at the Smyrna Rest Area. He played a major role in the development of the Smyrna Rest Area as one of the finest in the United States. He was instrumental in the creation of hospitality services that the rest area is known for, including the petting zoo, vending and coffee area and numerous other improvements to the facility and grounds.
He had a love for waterfowl, especially his variety of call ducks. He was an active member of the Delmarva Poultry Fanciers Bird Club, and the assistant superintendent of the poultry division of the Delaware State Fair.
In addition, he enjoyed going to auctions and farm sales throughout his life.
Above all else, Mr. Evans will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He especially enjoyed family birthday dinners, and was known to often say, "All you have is family."
He was preceded in death by his father, John C. Evans; and his mother and step-father, Martha J. Evans-Wilson and Garland Wilson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandra D. Evans; a daughter and a son-in-law, Stephanie (Evans) and AJ Mitchell of Townsend; a son and a daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Tara Evans of Townsend; four dearly loved grandchildren, AJ Mitchell, Jacob Mitchell, William Evans III and Emily J. Evans, all of Townsend; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, James and Betty Jean Evans of Landenberg, Pa., and John C. and Jean Evans of Wilmington; a sister and a brother-in-law, Vicie and Tony Estepp of Townsend; a sister-in-law, Susan Evans of Delaware City; a half-brother, Cecil Wilson of New Castle; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.
