BRIDGEVILLE- Virginia Swain Melson, of Bridgeville, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 in her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Melson was born Sept. 16, 1918 in Cannon, daughter of Maggie Day and George Frank Swain. In her early years she worked at Swain's Restaurant in Bridgeville with her sisters, Emma and Mary. She later worked at Woodbridge Cafeteria where she retired after many years. She was a wonderful cook and loved to read. She was a wonderful wife, loving mother, devoted grandmother and a generous kind friend. Everyone she would meet felt special and every stranger became a friend. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church, Bridgeville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, John Samuel; an infant son, Robert; five sisters; and three brothers. Giving thanks for the gift of her life and left to cherish her memory are three sons, Jack and Dorothy Melson, Charles and Rosanne Melson, Mike and Debbie Melson all of Bridgeville; a daughter, Ann Vogl-Pinkett and Leslie Pinkett of Milford; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and four great- great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at Fleischauer Funeral Home, 16 W Market Street, Greenwood, DE, where friends may call 1 hour earlier. Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. The family would like to give a special thanks for the wonderful caregivers that cared for Mrs. Melson after the death of her husband, Shirley Willoughby, Somona Pickett-Cann, Elaine Rifenburg, Mary Warner, and Terry Breeding.
