CAMDEN - Thomas H. Combs of Camden, passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford. He was 85. Mr. Combs was born February 11, 1931 in Jeffersonville, Indiana to the late Charles Combs and Philomena Rhiel Combs. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years, during the Korean War and Vietnam War retiring in 1971. While in the service some of his assignments were in San Diego, Calif., the South Pacific, Japan, Korea, Italy, NATO, the Pentagon, Bermuda and many east coast shipyards. After his military career he worked as a store manager for McGinnis Markets on New Burton Road, as a bartender for China Gardens Restaurant at the Blue Hen Mall, and as a mail clerk at the Post Office. Mr. Combs was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover. He volunteered to gather funds for the new church building, was a member of the home prayer group, and was involved in the adoration ministry. Mr. Combs was an avid fan of March Madness and enjoyed watching the Orioles baseball team. He took much pride in maintaining his yard, flowers and vegetable gardens. Mr. Combs especially enjoyed tending his fig trees, and liked to share them with his friends and neighbors. His greatest joy was being with his wife, Clara, and taking care of her while she was ill. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Clara Louie Combs, 2013; sisters, Edith Lomax and Charlotte Hall. He is survived by his daughters, Marlene Graff and Vivian Combs, both of Dover; granddaughter, Jessica Moore; great grandchildren, Piper and Garrett Moore; many in-laws, nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank the nurses and staff at the Delaware Veterans Home and Seasons Hospice for the care and support they provided to their father. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Monday, August 29, 2016, at Holy Cross Catholic church, 631 S. State Street, Dover. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, August 28, 2016, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt. 10), Dover. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Delaware Food Bank, 1040 Mattlind Way, Milford, DE 19963 or Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover, DE 19901.
