CHURCH HILL, Md. - Sonia Belle Speck Taylor passed away on May 14, 2022, at Compass Regional Hospice Center in Centreville, Md.
Born on September 10, 1941, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Isabelle Dorsey Speck.
Sonia graduated from Centreville High School, class of 1959, and graduated from Goldey Beacum Business School in 1960. She married Joseph G. Taylor, Jr. on July 9, 1960, and resided on Cherry Blossom Farm Lane until her death.
Sonia was a member of Price Bethany United Methodist Church for 61 years. She was director and teacher for 32 years at Tot Land Nursery School which brought her much joy. She also was a substitute teacher for Upper Queen Annes's County. In her early years she enjoyed bowling and was a swimming instructor. She looked forward to her yearly cruises with her husband Joe. She also enjoyed her time spent with her dog "Mr. Wags."
Sonia was preceded in death by her grandson, Britton S. Burgess; and son in law, D. Bruce Burgess; and is survived by her husband, Joe Taylor of Church Hill, Md.; son, Joseph G. Taylor, III (Patsy) of Church Hill, Md.; daughter, Wendy T. Burgess (Dr. John C. Arrabal) of Church Hill, Md.; grandchildren, Joseph G. Taylor, IV (Katie), Riley J. Buckle, David Parks (Tracy); and sister, Cheeri Ford (Tom); greatgrandchildren, Joseph G. Taylor, V, Michael R. Taylor. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Sonia requested the mention of the following people: Frances Goldstein Sindler (a childhood friend, who calls her everyday), Barbara Sue McFarland (her travel and church buddy), Henrietta Anthony, Marian Leiby, and the ladies of Price Bethany United Methodist Church.
A visitation will be held today Wednesday, May 18, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., where a service will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Church Hill Cemetery. A reception will be held after services at Cherry Blossom Farm.
