FALMOUTH, Ky. - Shelby W. Harrington III of Falmouth, Ky., formerly of Harrington, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007. He was 62.
Mr. Harrington was born July 18, 1945, in Smyrna, son of the late Shelby W. Jr. and Dorothy (Pratt) Harrington.
He graduated from Felton High School, now Lake Forest, with the class of 1964.
Mr. Harrington was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country in the Vietnam War.
He was employed with the Delaware Department of Transportation until January 1966, when he was drafted into the Army.
After his return home in 1968, he was employed in civil service at the Dover Air Force Base as a supervisor of the in-flight kitchen and later as the manager of the Patterson Dining Hall until his retirement.
Shelby raised and bred chickens and was a master breeder of white large fowl and bantams. He was nationally known for years from shows he attended with his birds across the U.S. and in Canada. One of his proudest accomplishments was winning the super grand champion of show in Lucasville, Ohio.
Shelby was also well known for his artistic talent in waterfowl woodcarving for which he won many decoy competitions. He was an avid waterfowl hunter and an expert duck caller.
For several years he had managed and coached a Little League team in Felton and Harrington.
Shelby had attended the Trinity United Methodist Church in Frederica, where he taught Sunday school and helped with the Church Youth Group.
He was a member of the Turner Ridge Baptist Church in Falmouth and a former member of the Frederica Lions Club.
In addition to his parents, Shelby was preceded in death by a sister, Sheila Harrington; and a brother, John Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Lynda Bell Harrington of Falmouth; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Shawn Harrington of Dover, Del., Michael W. and Lisa Harrington of Clayton, Del., and Eddie and Robin Harrington of Harrington, Del.; three stepchildren, Stan Potter and his wife Teresa of Houston, Tina Koehring and her husband Jim of Menominee, Wis., and Teresa Lewis of Falmouth; his former wife, Elneta (Tatman) Sheridan of Frederica; two sisters, Pat Harrington of Toccoa, Ga., and Norma Owens of Frederica; 10 grandchildren, Christina Koehring, Katie Harrington, Kayla Lewis, Brandon Harrington, Ryan Harrington, Amber Potter, Amanda Potter, Vicki Laughrun, Chris Laughrun and Aaron Hunt; three great-grandchildren, Shelbi Laughrun, Krysta Laughrun and Hunter Wacaster; and a cousin, Bruce Harrington and his wife Linda, and their children, Chuck Harrington and his wife Debbie, Laurie Culver and her husband Dean and Marci Columna and her husband Jon and their seven grandchildren, all of Laurel.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, in Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, Del.
Burial will be private.
