Samuel 'Sam' L. Young Sr., 79

SEAFORD - Samuel "Sam" L. Young Sr., died Thursday, June 18, 2009, in Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. He was 79. He was born in Virginia on Dec. 31, 1929, a son of the late Levin Young and Beaulah (Wheatley) Meyers. Sam served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Always a hard worker, he enjoyed his work as a truck driver for George & Lynch in Dover. He loved the outdoors and fishing was his passion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann (Ellis) Young; a daughter, Dawn Young; three brothers, Gene Young, Preston Young and Charles L. Young, who was killed in battle during World War II; and a sister. He is survived by three sons, Samuel L. Young Jr. of Ashville, N.C., Charles L. Young of Salisbury, and Shaun A. Young of Seaford; four grandchildren, Shirley Poltz, Kaitlynn Young, Samantha Young and Max Young; six great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Janelle, Jacob, Justin, Jordan and Jayden; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Short Funeral Home, Delmar, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Roland Tice will officiate. Interment at St. Stephen's Cemetery Park will be private at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.
