Ruth Ann Waldis Handy Dodd

SEAFORD - Ruth Ann Waldis Handy Dodd, passed away peacefully at Lofland Park Center Genesis in Seaford, on Sunday August 12, 2012. Ms. Dodd was born near Chestnut Grove in Caroline County, Md. on May 12, 1913. Her parents were Minnie Scott and Joseph Waldis. She graduated from Federalsburg High School in 1931. In November 1940, she married Charles Emery Handy and moved to Cokesbury near Reliance, Md. During her lifetime, she worked in sewing factories in Hurlock, Blades and Seaford; at Harper and Bateman Pickle Factory in Hurlock; and independently owned and operated a chicken and produce farm with her first husband until 1970 when they moved to Seaford. Following her husband's death in 1974, she married Henry Dodd of Reliance, Md. After Mr. Dodd's death she moved to Williams Pond in Seaford with her daughter Gail and her late son-in-law Albert Phillips. "Mom Mom Ruth" or "Great Mom" as many called her is survived by three sisters, Louise Massey, and Margaret Wheatley, both of Federalsburg, and Elizabeth Orn of California; and one brother William, (Bill) Waldis of Cambridge, Md. She is preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Frank; an older brother, Russell Waldis; and four sisters, Virginia Nichols, Kathleen DeGraw, Gertrude Lord, and Reba Sammons. "Mom Mom Ruth" or "Great Mom" as many called her is survived by three sisters, Louise Massey, and Margaret Wheatley, both of Federalsburg, and Elizabeth Orn of California; and one brother William, (Bill) Waldis of Cambridge, Md; she is also survived by two daughters from her first marriage to Mr. Handy, Joan Ann Sears and husband Kenneth of Seaford, and Gail Phillips of Seaford; four grandchildren, Jewel Thomas Reagan (John), Rene Thomas Perez (Ira), Dwayne A. Phillips and Darren W. Phillips; and four great-grandchildren, Tara Ann Elizabeth Reagan, Elyssa Perez, Jessica Perez and Marlo Steen-Phillips. We celebrate the time with "Mom Mom" and the many gifts of her love of cooking, sewing, decorating, story-telling events of her childhood and married life, life working on her parents' and husband's farm. In addition to caring for her home and family, she regularly attended church, participated in United Methodist Women's groups throughout her church life at Chestnut Grove Methodist Church, later became a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Maryland, and Gethsemane Church in Reliance, DE and St. John's United Methodist Church in Seaford, DE. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012, at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John's United Methodist Church, PO Box 299, Seaford, DE 19973 will be appreciated. Arrangements by Watson-Yates Funeral Home of Seaford.
