SMYRNA - After a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis, Ruby B. Evans, age 68, went home to be with the Lord. Ruby was born and raised in Columbia, S.C., the first born child of the late David and Bertha Burrell. Ruby attended the local schools in Columbia, and was an honor grad of C.A. Johnson High School where she came back to teach after graduating with honors from Benedict College. After teaching Art at C.A. Johnson for a few years, Ruby decided she wanted something more and accepted a job teaching Art in Fairbanks, Alaska. She was looking for different and she certainly found it as she learned to adapt and dress for 50 degree below zero weather. She led the revolt which ended with female teachers being allowed to wear pants outside when they had bus duty in the winter. Ruby was happy there, but returned home for a year and worked as Dean of Women at Friendship Jr. College in Rockhill, N.C. She then relocated back to Anchorage, Alaska, and taught at East High until her MS led to a medical retirement. During these years Ruby was active with the Alaska Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as well as with many of the ministries of her beloved Zion Lutheran Church. When she found it too difficult to get out, the Women's Bible Study Group met at her home every Wednesday until she left Anchorage. After retirement she found joy in a short career as an actress with Out North Theater Production Company where she made her debut in "Reckless." She also loved traveling and visiting her family and friends. Ruby's illness brought her to Delaware where she was cared for at Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Smyrna, until her death. The Dover Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta found her there and surrounded her with sisterly love. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, David, Isaac, Jesse; and her beloved friend Mr. C.T. Lewis of Anchorage, Alaska, who visited her quarterly until his death. She is survived by three sisters, Loretta Taylor (JB) of Wilmington, Amani Burrell, and Pamoja Pagnotta (Lee), both of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great- nieces and nephews. A service celebrating Ruby's life will be held at Bethel A.M.E. Church (604 Walnut St., Wilmington, DE 19802) on Thursday May 12, 2011, at noon. Memorial donations in memory of Ruby may be sent to the MS Society of DE at 2 Mill Rd. Suite 106, Wilmington, DE 19806. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
