CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Roberta L. Johnson of Chestertown died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in Heron Point, Chestertown.
Mrs. Johnson was born May 11, 1915, in Tucson, Ariz., daughter of the late Charles and Erma (Brown) Wooddell.
She was raised and attended school in Sacramento, Calif., and continued on with Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y., obtaining her bachelor"s degree.
After graduating, Mrs. Johnson enlisted with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from 1942-46 with the rank of captain, as a WAC personnel officer in recruiting and inductions.
Her photograph was used in numerous publications including Vogue and Harpers Weekly.
In 1946, she met and married her husband (a DuPont engineer) and traveled the world, living in Japan for four years. There, Mrs. Johnson became interested in needlework and artwork.
In 1965, they moved to Kentmore Park, near Kennedyville.
Mrs. Johnson owned and operated the Heirloom Knit & Craft Shop in Chestertown for 15 years.
Mrs. Johnson was a life member and past national president of the Embroideries Guild of America and past president of the Chestertown Garden Club.
Her love of art included pastels and charcoals, and knitting, crocheting and embroidery.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Franklin Carlisle Johnson, in 1990; and a sister, Nancy Thornton, in 2002.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James A. Johnson and Christiana of Church Hill, and William C. Johnson and Erma Cook of Millington; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call on from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in Shrewsbury Parish Church, Kennedyville.
Burial will be in adjoining cemetery.
Memorials may be offered to the Kent County High School Relay for Life Team, c/o the Galena Funeral Home, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD 21635.
