DOVER - Robert Hillery Mercer, of Dover, formerly of Milford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Westminster Village. Robert was born in Mt. Airy, Md., the son of the late Edgar Trigg Mercer and Hattie Hillery Mercer. He served our country in the Merchant Marines during the last year of World War II. After the war, Robert moved to Milford in 1945 and began his career at Caulk Company. He worked his way up through the company for 33 years, serving as the President of Caulk, Division of Dentsply, before retiring in 1978.
A longtime member of Avenue United Methodist Church, Milford, where he served on the Board of Trustees, Bob was instrumental in starting the early morning church service (so golfers could have an earlier tee time?). He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Dover, the American Dental Trade Association, served on the Milford Hospital Board of Directors, and was one of the founding members of the Shawnee Country Club, Milford. Bob loved to play golf and continued playing until the age of 98. Until he was 102, he drove his car!
For the past 18 years, Bob enjoyed living at Westminster Village. His family would like to thank the entire staff and the residents who became his dear friends for the kindness and caring they showed him over the years.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Mercer; his second wife, Barbara Mercer; and his sister, Jessie VanSant. He is survived by his daughters, Ann Varey and Kaye Majoch; step-sons, Douglas Kutz and William Kutz; grandchildren, Andrew, Thomas, Cindy, Susan and Rob; eight great- grandchildren; and niece, Elaine Thompson.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Dover, followed by a reception. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Westminster Village, 191 Westminster Drive, Dover, DE 19904 (Benevolent Support Fund) or to Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover, Delaware 19901. Arrangements by Lofland Funeral Home, Milford. Letters of condolence may be sent and shared with the family at www.loflandandmcknatt.com.
