DOVER - Robert Earle Osborne Jr., of Dover, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 88.
Mr. Osborne was born in Carneys Point, N.J., son of the late Robert E. and Edith (McLean) Osborne.
He graduated from Penns Grove (N.J.) Regional High School in 1937 and the University of Delaware in 1942 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in the school of agriculture, animal husbandry.
During World War II, Mr. Osborne served in the European Theater in the Third Army (Gen. George Patton), 4th Armored Division, Company C, Rifle Squad and received a Combat Infantry Badge, two Bronze Campaign Stars and a Purple Heart.
After his return, he was employed by the Delaware Agriculture Extension Service as a 4-H Club agent in Kent County, Dover, where he worked for two years.
During this time, he met Margaret Webb who was employed there. They married May 31, 1952.
Mr. Osborne then worked for the Department of Agriculture as an analytical chemist retiring in 1981.
He was one of the agriculture founders of the Agricultural Alumni Association at the University of Delaware.
Mr. Osborne was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Dover, where he served on the vestry.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, walking, bird watching and traveling with his family.
Their travels were mostly by rail across Canada, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Florida. His favorite vacation spot was in Bermuda, where he and Margaret returned several times.
Mr. Osborne also volunteered for the Blood Bank.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Gannon.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret (Webb) Osborne; two daughters, Jean O. Simons and her husband Howard of Glenview, Ill., and Leslie O. McKernan and her husband Stephen of League City, Texas; two grandsons; two granddaughters; and a sister, Leslie Larrabee of Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Christ Episcopal Church, South State and Water streets, Dover.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
