CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Richard Alan "Shady" Lane of Chestertown died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, in Chester River Hospital Center. He was 56.
Born on Aug. 12, 1950, in Chestertown, he was the son of the late Henry Merchant Lane and Gladys Elmore Lane Lucas.
Shady grew up in Chestertown and was a 1968 graduate of Chestertown High School. He attended Frostburg State College, where as an All-American in both soccer and lacrosse. He was inducted into the hall of fame. He graduated in 1973 majoring in physical education. While at Frostburg he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
Upon his return to Chestertown, Shady worked in the construction field with Church Hill Lumber and later owning and operating his own company. He then worked with Kent County as a building inspector before taking a position with KRM as project manager, where he has worked for the past 10 years.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and Chestertown Baptist Church. He volunteered with Chestertown Volunteer Fire Co. and Kent and Queen Anne"s Rescue Squad.
He was an avid sailor, tremendous athlete, and dedicated coach, volunteering his time with little league baseball, lacrosse, and soccer.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; a son, Erek Lane; a stepson, Eric Unruh; a stepdaughter, Nikki Strong and her husband Jamie; two brothers, Larry Merchant "Buddy" Lane and Stephan Dennis Lane; his stepfather, Roland Lucas; along with one grandchild, all of Chestertown. He is also survived by a stepsister, Margaret LeGrande of Virginia.
Services will be 5 p.m. today in Chestertown Baptist Church, Md. 291, Chestertown.
Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kent and Queen Anne"s Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 126, Chestertown, MD 21620.
