R. Lester 'Les' Ammons Sr., 87
SEAFORD - R. Lester "Les" Ammons Sr. of Seaford died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87.
Mr. Ammons was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Salem, N.J., son of the late R. Lester Ammons and Myrtle Shepperd Sension.
He played baseball on Delmar town teams before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He worked for more than 28 years at E.I. Du Pont in Seaford, where he retired as a fire inspector at the plant. He loved hunting and the outdoors; consequently, he had a second career in farming, from which he retired in 1985.
As Mr. Ammons' greatest love was baseball, after returning from the war, he achieved much success playing for Hebron, Md., and Sharptown, Md., teams in the Central Shore League. He was a supporter of the Eastern Shore Baseball Foundation and was honored to be inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame Nov. 18, 1990. He continued his love of sports by playing in softball leagues in Seaford and Salisbury, Md., for many years and bowling in the Seaford and Salisbury leagues. As a longtime member of the Seaford Golf and Country Club, he loved golf and played as much as possible until his brief illness.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Bobbie Jo Ammons; a son and a daughter-in-law, Skip and Charlotte Ammons of Delmar; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy and Charles Bowen of Salisbury, Deena Marie Yale of Bridgeville, and Lisa Lynn and Michael Hignutt of Seaford; a sister, Birdie Moodey of Penns Grove, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Angie James, Marty Ammons, Sherry O'Connor, Chuck Bowen, Samantha Yale, Austin Carmean, Dalton Hignutt, Rachel Hignutt and Colin Hignutt; and five great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Megan, Rebecca, Brendan and Kerry.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove St., Delmar.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, where friends also may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Roland Tice will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Delmar.
The family suggests memorial contributions to The Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame, P.O. Box 2071, Salisbury, MD 21802.
