SMYRNA - Patrick W. Murray, of Smyrna, and Breezy Point, N.Y., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. He was 75. Mr. Murray was born March 15, 1935, in Manhattan, N.Y., and resided there and in Breezy Point, Long Island and in San Francisco, Calif., prior to marrying Cathy Madigan, a Radio City Music Hall Rockette on May 5, 1962. Pat graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Science and from George Washington University with a Masters Degree with Distinction in Forensic Science. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Murray served in the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent from 1962 until 1986. He finished out his career as the SAC, Special Agent in Charge, of the New York Office, the world's largest field office. During his career in the FBI Pat served both in the United States and abroad. He came to Delaware with MBNA America in 1986 as their Vice President of Government and Public Relations, where he served until his retirement in 2000. Mr. Murray was Delaware's Secretary of Public Safety under Governor Mike Castle and also served as Chairman of the Council on Transportation, Vice Chairman of the Stone Commission on Prison Security, the Chairman of the Hazardous Materials Commission and Chairman of the Mass Transit Task Force of the General Assembly. He served Kent County as Deputy Recorder of Deeds, and has served as Deputy Director of the Department of Elections since January 2006. Pat was Chairman of the Kent County Republican Party for many years after serving as Chairman of the "Fighting 29th" District. He was affectionately known as "The Boss." He served as a delegate to three Republican National Nominating Conventions and was a Bush Campaign Floor Manager and member of the Platform Committee at the 2004 Convention. He chaired many local and state campaigns for public office. Among his many public services, he was Past President of the Lincoln Club of Delaware, former Chairman of the Board of the Salvation Army, former Vice President of Finance and Board Member of the Boy Scouts of America Delmarva Chapter, Fundraising Co-Chairman of the Girl Scouts of America Delaware Chapter, Vice President of the Committee of 100, Board member the March of Dimes, Finance Committee Member of the United Way, Board member of the "Teen Court" of Kent County, former Chairman of the First State Chapter of the Former Special Agents of the FBI, Inc., a member of the National Academy Associates Delaware Maryland Chapter, and a Board member of the American Heart Association. Currently, he was serving as a Trustee on the Board of Radio City Music Hall Rockette Foundation in New York. He was a Patron member of the National Rifle Association and served on the Nominating Committee. Pat and his wife are Benefactors of the Christiana Care Foundation where they are members of the 1879 Society. They are also Benefactors of the All Hallows Preparatory School in New York City where they are members of the "Luther Rice" Society. He was a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church. He and his wife Cathy are members of the Heritage Society at GW University and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 56 in Washington, D.C. He served on the Americanism Commission and was active nationally, together with his wife Cathy, in the American Legion Baseball World Series and playoffs. He served one term as the National Chairman of American Legion Oratorical Contest. Mr. Murray is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cathy Madigan Murray; two daughters, Elizabeth Murray Griffith, MD and her husband Charles Henry Griffith, IV, MD, of Winchester, Ky., and Laura Marie Murray Hodges and her husband William Scott Hodges of Avondale, Pa.; one son, William Charles Murray and his wife Stephanie Ruth DiFilippo Murray of Middletown; and eight grandchildren, Charles Henry V, William Christopher and Laura Elizabeth Griffith, William Maxwell, Catherine Victoria and Alexandra Marie Hodges, and Madigan Leigh and Mary Snider Murray. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, in Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 631 S. State St., Dover. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd., Dover. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
