Oletha Ferndell "Fern" Banks, 62

DOVER - Oletha Ferndell "Fern" Banks of Dover departed this life Tuesday, July 31, 2007, after a tragic car accident that occurred near Richmond, Va. She was 62.

She was born in Boley, Okla., on Nov. 20, 1944.

Ms. Banks was the fifth of nine children born to Forest and Olivia Banks.

Her early years were spent in Vallejo, Calif.

She completed her formal education at various universities: Pepperdine University, Oklahoma Christian University, Central State University in Edmond, Calif., and Northeastern in Talequah, Okla.

Ms. Banks had energy and zest for life which drew young people to her where they found affection, compassion and wise counsel.

She was well traveled and had a broad range of experiences.

Ms. Banks was known for her quick wit, wicked stories and ability to talk smack with young people.

Those who knew her best knew her as a wordsmith. Her ability to verbally spar was well known. After a bout with her, one would leave torn, praising her abilities or licking their wounds in defeat.

Two of Ms. Banks" life"s passions were traveling and her desire to serve. She loved helping and being of service to others. Answering the call of service, Ms. Banks spent two years in the Peace Corps.

She made her home in Delaware, where she worked for the state of Delaware as a social worker.

After retirement, Ms. Banks remained active by training and showing dogs at the national level, much to the chagrin of her faithful companion Caesar.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Hope MacTizic.

She is survived by her son, Troy William Stacey Banks of Florida; a granddaughter, Shavonna Cierra Banks of Ohio; three brothers and four sisters, Ronald and his wife, Elsie Banks, Charles and his wife, Margaret Banks, Dollie and her husband, Arnellious Crenshaw, Ollie Smotherman, Linda and her husband, Albert Rice, Forest Troy Banks and Niann Banks; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
