NEW CASTLE - Melvin A. Halter Sr. of New Castle died Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. He was 92.

A native Delawarean, Mr. Halter was born in Wilmington on June 4, 1915, son of the late J. Alvin and Perla (Deakyn) Halter.

He was employed as a professional brick layer until his retirement in 1974.

In his leisure time, Mr. Halter greatly enjoyed fishing, gardening and feeding the birds around his home.

He was a devoted family man throughout his life and especially delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Viola M. (Parker) Halter; four children, Viola M. Hall of Clayton, Melvin A. Halter Jr. and his wife Anna Mae of Newark, Elva Hohn of Dover, and John Halter of Pearl, Miss.; a sister, Zeida Carter of Payton, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
