May W. Proud, 83 SMYRNA - May W. Proud, of Smyrna, passed away peacefully at home Monday, Nov. 16, 2009. She was 83. Mrs. Proud was born May 14, 1926, in Bear, the daughter of the late William H. and Dora Thorp Walther. She was a homemaker who enjoyed helping her late husband haul livestock to New Holland, Pennsylvania and to Vintage, Pa. for twelve years. Mrs. Proud belonged to the Kent County Republican Committee for over 30 years and was active in the Kent County Republican Women's Club. She also served on the Southern State Home Advisory Committee for many years and the Smyrna Grange, in which she was the treasurer for. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert M. Proud, Jr.; and a daughter, Barbara Proud. She is survived by four daughters, Linda Kenney of New Castle,June Hartman of Newark, Shirley Rawley of Smyrna, and Robin Stopyra of Alpharetta, Ga.; a son, William Proud of Smyrna; a brother, William Walther of Bear,; six sisters, Sylvia Walther of Bear, Caroline Neal of New Castle, Dora Edwards of Newark, Wilma Gotts of Newark, Frances Rodgers of Franklin, N.C., and Ruth Ellen Scott of Newark; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be noon, Thursday Nov. 19, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street, Smyrna. Family and friends are welcome at 11 a.m. for the viewing. Burial will be in Greensboro Cemetery in Greensboro, Md. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19904; or to Alzheimer's Association Delaware Chapter, 100 S. Main St. Suite 211 Smyrna, DE 19977.
